“A fine catch in Colombo”

The Seafood Cove at theMount Lavinia Hotel on the outskirts of Colombo is one of my favourite restaurants in Sri Lanka. In fact it’s the place where I first started to eat fish!

Set on the beach in a rustic-style Cadjan-thatched gazebo, this is the restaurant where I really like to go soon after I arrive in Sri Lanka. I don’t mean that in a pretentious sort of way, it’s  just a peaceful and relaxed place where you can unwind with your toes in the sand after a long flight. Oh, and the food really is excellent.

Once the residence of a British governor, Mount Lavinia Hotel not only hosts a favourite restaurant of mine, but also has a beautiful beach on which the restaurant can be found. The hotel was even used for some scenes in the film The Bridge on the River Kwai.

Freshly caught lobster, jumbo prawns, cuttlefish, squid and fish straight from the Indian Ocean are on display in a massive ice basket as you enter the restaurant. All you have to do is tell the chef how you want your fish cooked: grilled, sautéed, deviled, poached or fried. If I’m in a healthy kind of a mood, I go for grilled Thora Malu (seer fish). Most of the time though, it tastes great fried.
